LESSON 03 · FOUNDATIONS

Choose and verify a ROS 2 environment

Keep operating system, ROS distribution and simulator in a compatible set.

Environment and verification

Documented target: Ubuntu 24.04 · ROS 2 Jazzy · Gazebo Harmonic where used. Browser labs tested; ROS/Ubuntu/hardware execution not performed here.

What you will understand

  • Select a compatible version set.
  • Source each terminal.
  • Record actual versions.

Prerequisites: A small Linux and Python toolkit and its stated environment.

The idea, made clear.

This path targets Ubuntu 24.04, ROS 2 Jazzy and Gazebo Harmonic. This is a deliberately pinned baseline, not a claim that Jazzy is the newest release. Follow the official distribution-specific installation guide to configure signed repositories and packages.

ROS and simulator releases are separate products. Package names and plugin interfaces change. Humble tutorials typically target Ubuntu 22.04 and a different default simulator pairing. ROS 1 catkin_make and roslaunch commands do not run unchanged in a ROS 2 colcon workspace.

The website validates its browser models locally. Ubuntu installation, RViz, Gazebo and hardware have not been executed on the website build machine. Expected outputs are guidance rather than fabricated transcripts. Record your actual versions and keep mismatched tutorials in separate environments.

Try it, step by step.

1

Install from official instructions

Configure the ROS repository and install Jazzy desktop using the linked official guide. Review privileged commands before running them.

Expected: Installation completes without unresolved packages.

2

Verify your shell

Run after installation in a fresh terminal.

ros2-environment-2.txt
source /opt/ros/jazzy/setup.bash
printf "%s\n" "$ROS_DISTRO"
ros2 pkg prefix demo_nodes_py
python3 --version

Expected: jazzy, an installed package prefix and your Python version.

3

Test communication

Run talker and listener in separate sourced terminals.

ros2-environment-3.txt
ros2 run demo_nodes_py talker
# Other terminal:
ros2 run demo_nodes_py listener

Expected: The listener prints samples; stop each with Ctrl+C.

If something goes wrong

ros2 not found
Source the installed setup script and check installation.
Instructions request catkin_make
Those are ROS 1 instructions; do not mix workspaces.
